Humidity Control
South African homes swing from dry highveld winters to wet summers, and a piano feels every bit of it.
Why humidity matters
A piano is mostly wood, and wood moves with the moisture in the air around it. As humidity rises and falls through the year the soundboard swells and shrinks, which pushes the instrument out of tune, and over enough seasons it can crack the soundboard or loosen the tuning pins.
Controlling the moisture around the instrument is the single most effective thing you can do to keep it stable between tunings, and it costs far less than the repairs it prevents.
Dampp-Chaser systems
We fit Dampp-Chaser climate control systems, which sit discreetly inside the piano and hold the humidity around the soundboard steady rather than trying to condition the whole room.
Every installation is set up for the room the piano actually lives in. We fit the system, set it, show you how to top up the water, and check it on your regular tuning visits.
- Fitted inside the instrument, out of sight
- Holds tuning noticeably longer between visits
- Protects the soundboard, bridges and pin block
- Serviced as part of your normal tuning schedule
